The first vice president of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, will resign “in the coming days”

The first vice president of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, will resign “in the coming days”, as she announced in an interview with Cadena Ser, collected by the Europa Press Agency.

The reason for this decision is triggered by the announcement of the Andalusian elections, dated for May 17, as confirmed this Monday by the current president of the Andalusian Regional Government, Juan Manuel Moreno.

Montero has not yet specified his departure from the Central Government, nor whether this Tuesday, March 24, will be the last Council of Ministers in which he will participate, a decision that will depend on Pedro Sánchez.

What was already known is that the current Minister of Finance, since she became a socialist candidate for the Junta, has been announcing that she would leave her responsibilities in the Government of Spain once the Andalusian elections were called.

In statements reported by Europa Press, Montero has also acknowledged that he will have to leave the Government without being able to present a draft General State Budget for 2026, although he has indicated that “all the work” has already been done in this regard and that he has “absolute certainty” that whoever replaces him at the head of the Ministry of Finance “will continue with this very difficult task.”
