The Association āCitizens for the Defense of Heritageā shows its concern about the state of abandonment in which the Claras Convent. A time, more than enough, for the property to carry out the pertinent corrections of the deficiencies detected or for the Junta de Castilla y León and even the Salamanca City Council to initiate the procedures to demand actions aimed at achieving an optimal state of conservation, as expected of a Asset of Cultural Interest.
Despite being one of the most outstanding religious, historical and artistic complexes in the city, any resident or visitor to Salamanca can verify that This monument lacks care, protection and security measuresas well as the disclosure or promotion it deserves.
Since the end of 2022, the leaks coming from a gutter which causes waterlogging of the faƧade (this presents significant displacements of ashlars) with the consequent damage to the sandstone: lichens, efflorescence and sand formation.
Although many years ago action was taken on the sidewalk of Calle las Claras, with the clear objective of preventing water from reaching the walls, let us remember that on its interior side there are the mural paintings and the convent church itself, the results of this measure have been insufficient as, notably, can be seen on the corner. Precisely, at the entrance door to the church, from the street, some vandalistic graffiti has been perpetuated, next to the image of the saint.
The evacuation of the stormwater They are also problematic on the Lucero Street faƧade. Various leaks, in each and every one of its vents, give a good account of this and reveal the state of abandonment in which this monument is found, both due to the negligence of the owner and the indifference of the competent Administrations, who do not carry out the periodic inspections to which they are obliged.
Once inside, and as visitors will have seen, the unique roofing of the church (discovered in 1973 and investigated in recent years with relevant conclusions) lacks due surveillance and security or the appropriate physical protection, as well as the conservation measures and controls that every work of art requires.
