Down Salamanca demands a truly inclusive society for World Syndrome Day

Down Salamanca demands that the people it represents have the opportunity to access decent work and receive quality education, among other demands, for World Syndrome Day, which will take place on Saturday, March 21.

Under the motto ‘It’s not me, it’s you’, the Salamanca entity along with the rest of the members of Down España will ask the public to join the campaign in pursuit of building a truly inclusive society. “If we understand disability only as a problem we will never move forward as a society,” says its director, AgustĂn MatĂa.

The campaign revolves around the concepts of difficulty, impediment, limitation and problem. Words that “society imposes on people with Down syndrome and that build barriers” that prevent the development of their abilities and their full inclusion.

“We should never have thought that they cannot or should not live like everyone else. We are in time to transform this reality that infantilizes and overprotects them by creating the opportunities and conditions that make it possible. The problem is not them, it is us,” maintains Pep Ruf, coordinator of the National Independent Living Network of Down Spain.
