Last Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved Royal Decree 180/2026 in which immigrants in an irregular situation without legal residence in Spain, in addition to Spaniards residing abroad, will be able to access healthcare for free.
This rule proposed by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, aims to recover universal access that was limited by the Royal Decree approved during the Government of Mariano Rajoy.
With this new Royal Decree, the bureaucracy to access health care is simplified, as long as a responsible declaration is made and the person who is going to receive health care has no other way to access this coverage.
In addition, the application can be submitted at health centers and hospitals, where they will be given a provisional document that will be formalized by the different autonomous communities.
On the other hand, it will not be necessary to request registration to access it, but by presenting certificates of schooling or enrollment in public centers, as well as reports from social services or invoices or any type of necessary document, they will be able to access healthcare without problem.
It should be remembered that both immigrants in an irregular situation and Spaniards residing in other countries will benefit from this initiative, as explained by the Europapress agency.
