José Calvo Fernández, former penitentiary canon of the Salamanca Cathedral, dies

The Church of Salamanca has fired priest José Calvo Fernández at 96 years of age. He exercised the ministry for six decades, in addition to having been Chief Notary of the Diocese of Salamanca.

The Diocese of Salamanca has indicated in a statement that “it was a discreet and faithful witness to the life of the diocese, accompanying processes, decisions and key moments from closeness, rigor and listening.”

He held the position of Chief Notary of the Diocese of Salamanca from 1964 to January 2019, more than fifty years of uninterrupted service to the Ecclesiastical Court and the diocesan legal life. Throughout that time, countless marriage files and canonical processes passed through his hands, which he always approached with a deep pastoral sense and ecclesial responsibility.

Was Penitentiary Canon of the Cathedral of Salamanca since 1988 and Diocesan Judge since 1983, positions he held with discretion and dedication. In addition, he carried out extensive pastoral and educational work as a teacher in the Minor Seminary and in different educational centers in the city.
