The residents of Castellanos de Villiquera have called a citizen rally against the installation of a biomethane plant in the town’s municipal area. It will take place next January 24 at 12:00 in front of the town’s Town Hall. The residents themselves have organized with residents of other nearby towns such as Calzada de Valdunciel, where a meeting was held in which they collected 300 allegations against the project, which is in the presentation phase until January 20.
The residents are promoting a citizen platform, with the name “Stop Biogás Castellanos de Villiquera”, with the aim of “defending the interests of the affected municipalities, demanding clear information and promoting a real public debate before decisions are adopted that could have an irreversible impact.

The residents of the municipality also denounce that the City Council “has not offered any public information or explanation to its neighbors about this project. This lack of communication has generated deep concern and discomfort among the population, who consider that it has acted without transparency and without citizen participation.” The reasons given to oppose the installation of the plant are odors and environmental impact, the increase in heavy traffic, the possible contamination of soils and aquifers, the negative effects on health and well-being, the degradation of the natural environment, the impact of the Camino de Santiago that passes through the town and the lack of real economic return for the local population.
The town joins others in the province that also have similar plant projects that have met with outright rejection from neighbors. This is the case of Villamayor, Babilafuente, MachacĂłn or San Pedro de Rozados, which already have platforms against the implementation of these factories in their municipal areas or in neighboring towns.
